6th, 7th and 8th graders with their completed and blessed icons, ready to take home for the Triduum.
For some years I have guided the students at St. Patrick's grammar school in painting their own icons during Lent. We work on them each Friday afternoon--then by Holy Week they are ready to be blessed and taken home. They are done traditionally, using egg-tempera on wood. I teach them, but each student paints the icon by him or herself.

This is a Syrian style icon. The red background is hand-ground cinnabar.
